Cattle Working Clinic with John Pokarier confirmed for July 31st

We can now confirm that we will be holding a Cattle Working Clinic on July 31st at the Armidale Exhibition Centre, with John Pokarier from Tamworth instructing.

John has been training cutting horses for many years and can offer a wealth of experienced. The clinic will cover all aspects of working cattle, from getting your horse started, to positional work, fence work etc.

Numbers will be limited to around 15 - 20 riders, with the cost for the clinic to be $75 per person (covers arena hire and cattle costs).

On the Sunday, August 1st, we will then hold a Team Penning Day, with practice runs in the morning followed by competition runs in the afternoon.

Next Club day set for July 3rd.

The next club day will be held on July 3rd at the Exhibition Centre, where we will spend time working on pattern events, such as Horsemanship, Equitation, Trail and possibly the Decathlon (as used at the Paint Horse Nationals).

Getting patterns correct and precise is often much harder than it looks, so this self-help day will be the ideal way to get out and practise without show ring pressure, so why not come along and have a bit of fun?

If we get enough people there we would also like to have an informal meeting (perhaps over lunch?) to discuss our future direction, plan some events and discuss a number of issues relating to the club and the Exhibition Centre.

Some of the future events we would like to hold are further clinics with the likes of Bert Purcell, Ann-Maree Mianowany and Ric and Tracey Hutchinson, possibly a cattle working clinic with John Pokarier, plus our team penning days, some combined training days/ribbon days and other shows and events. If there is anything you would like to see us stage then please just drop us a line and let us know. Check out the Coming Events tab at the top of the page to view the dates we have booked at the Exhibition Centre so that you know when events will be held!

Action aplenty at the Armidale Stockman's Challenge

Thirty competitors fronted the judge, Don Tanner of Bendemeer, for the inaugural Armidale Stockman's Challenge on Saturday June 12th, with Tamworth local Mat Oakley taking home the major prizes.

Competing over three rounds, with Two Handed Cutting, Working Cowhorse and an Indoor Campdraft, the event attracted competitors from Manilla, Tamworth and as far away as Gloucester, as well as a number of locals willing to try their hand at this unique event.

Local club member Stephen Kelly was right in amongst the action, taking first and third in the Indoor Campdraft leg of the event and finishing in equal second place overall, while Wollomombi rider John Wright placed second in the Campdraft leg and equal fourth overall.

Erica Coulthard from Manilla took out the award, donated by Burtons Saddlery of Armidale, for the Highest Placing Lady rider, while Armidale girl Anna Bragg took out the award, donated by Horseland Armidale, for the Highest Placing Youth rider. Highest placing Registered Quarter Horse was Mat Oakleys 'Kewpe Doc', while John Pokarier and 'Destination' was the Highest Placing Australian Stock Horse. With two horses in the event John also placed equal second overall with 'Bunnikikns', as well as third place overall with 'Destination'.

For some photos of the event please check out our Facebook page. And if any members have some more photos that they would like to share with us then please email them through, as we would love to see them!

On the Sunday we also held a Team Penning event, with around eighteen teams lining up for the day and everyone having a great time.

The weekend was held as a fundraiser for the building of a canteen and office facility at the Exhibition Centre, and while a final result isn't known just yet as to how much was raised, it appears that it will be over $2500, which is a great result for our first such event! In conjunction with the other organisations who helped with the event, the Armidals Show Society and Armidale Campdraft Club, it is hoped that we can continue to stage this event on the June Longweekend each year as a fundraiser for the Exhibition Centre, which will assist in us being able to get many necessary jobs done on the grounds to make it better for everyone to use.

All is set for the Armidale Stockman's Challenge...

All is in readiness for the Armidale Stockman's Challenge at the Armidale Exhibition Centre on the June Long Weekend!

We have received more than thirty entries for the Challenge itself and have quite a few teams nominated for the Team Penning so the weekend is shaping up to be a good one.

Draws for the three rounds of the Stockman's Challenge have now been completed and are available for download HERE.

Please CLICK HERE for the full program along with the entry forms!
Team Penning Rules are available HERE
AQHA Rules for Working Cowhorse are available HERE.

Originally we anticipated being able to offer around $1000 in prizemoney for the Stockman's Challenge, however thanks to the generosity of our sponsors we will be able to offer more than this, in addition to being able to offer some additional prizes as well! It will also mean we will be able to pay prizemoney down to a few extra places.

We hope to see as many people as possible there for this unique event!

Recent Events...

On Saturday June 5th we are held a clinic with Ann-Maree Mianowany at the Armidale Exhibition Centre, and while there were only a few participants it proved to be a very informative day!

We will be sure to have Ann-Maree back again in the near future, hopefully for a combined training/competition day similar to those we have run in the past!

After a slow start to getting numbers for our Bert Purcell Clinic at the Armidale Exhibition Centre on May 15 & 16, we ended up with a great response from members, with those in attendance having a great time while receiving expert tuition! We are already looking forward to staging another clinic with Bert in the coming months and I'm sure this one will be even better received! Stay tuned for details.

who took home awards in the Challenge Series!

What a great start to the year we have had, with five shows in 5 weeks to kick start our year! Congratulations to all those competitors who have participated at the shows held at Uralla, Armidale, Glen Innes and Inverell.

Our prizes for the three divisions of the Northern Tablelands Western Horse Challenge have now arrived from the U.S.A., where they were made by Montana Silversmiths. Our sincere thanks to our sponsors for these lovely buckles - Bakers Barn at Inverell, Jill Wagner and Ozziewebs Digital.

The last round of events for the Challenge Series were held at the Armidale Show on March 6th, but we kept the points tally behind closed doors until we could hold a presentation night, which we held on Saturday 20th of March at the Exhibition Centre, following a practice day being held.

Thank you to everyone who came along and made it a most enjoyable evening!

As can be seen with the photograph on this page, Jenny Blair and Jill Wagner finished as Champion and Runner-Up for both the All Aged and Amateur divisions, while Natalie Camilleri beat out her brother Anthony for the major prize in the Youth division.

There was also a High Point award for the Beginner / Improver events held over the entire series, with Teegan Armitage just pipping her sister Hayley for the main prize.

Congratulations to all those who competed in the Challenge series and to those who took out the awards, and a special thank you to our sponsors for the events, Ken Baker of Bakers Barn Saddlery at Inverell, Jill Wagner and Peter Simpson of Ozziewebs Digital in Armidale.

As mentioned earlier we also held a practice day on the Saturday at the Exhibition Centre, with a small number of riders taking advantage of the opportunity to use the facility.

From June 2010 onward we have booked the FIRST weekend of each month, so that it will be easier to organise events and avoid clashing with other events that we know our members participate in. What we now need to do is organise what type of events we will run on the weekends we have booked, so if any members out there would like to see some particular event staged then please let us know so that we may be able to organise it. Please keep in mind though that we want to mix the events up by staging different types of training days, clinics and shows.

For further details regarding events and activities, or to download forms or newsletters, please click on the tabs at the top of this page.

Thank you for taking the time to check out our club. We look forward to seeing you at our events in the near future!
